As an overly alliterative partner to the Kir Royale treble clef birthday cake I made a few weeks back, this cake was asked for for another member of the same family, and I’m slightly relieved to say it also didn’t disappoint.
For the first time in a while I can proudly admit that a decision to do a post isn’t entirely random and last minute. Not only had I been a questionable friend in forgetting to make cake for not one, but two of my best friends’ birthdays, one of the girls I was closest to at work finally managed to escape and find a new job so I felt there was cause for celebration all around! So after joking about bringing a bottle of bucks fizz to work I landed on these cupcakes as, I will admit, a somewhat reluctant alternative. But hopefully they were worth it!
While I was really excited when one of my friends from work asked me to make her daughter’s birthday cake, it’s safe to say I was also slightly apprehensive since I haven’t really made anything that requires any major decorative finesse in a while. And since it was also for her 18th birthday, I felt I really did need to pull out the stops.
In the last Sunday before my Tough Mudder, I admit defeat by breaking my no sugar streak in utter style. This, of course, could only be done by choosing something that is basically full of the stuff. To be honest, I think this is probably quite a good representation of my training levels in general; I started out with good intentions but, in the end, I’m not actually sure how much further along the fitness lines I really am! But think of it this way, this is at least the penultimate time you’ll have to hear about it; there is always a silver lining!
Although I usually class myself as semi-decent at baking, in this post I am instead making some claims towards telepathy and the power of reading minds. If you’re anything like me, you will probably look at this post and one ‘word’ will come to mind: ‘eh?’. However it is with reluctance that I admit that this is a pretty good representation of not only this bake, but my entire week. My brain does seem to have been in a semi-fried state for the last couple of days at least, but this is not stopping me from bombarding you with another post where I think it’s a good idea to bake bread in a cake tin.
Although I do in some ways feel I need to apologise for the abundance of cake on my blog recently, I feel like I can be forgiven considering the circumstances. Although baking is, on the whole, definitely more subjective I would have to contradict that in this instance: if you do not like the sound of caramel shortbread and cake combined then, I’m sorry, but you’re wrong.
In the wise words of the cookie monster, ‘C is for Cookie, that’s good enough for me’. And, unfortunately for Hayley, it’s going to have to be good enough for her too. My decision to make Hayley a cookie cake for her 23rd birthday was, however, not solely sparked by my desire to use what is the most overused quote in blog posts about cookies, but because I have been meaning to try it for ages. And if you have ever had a birthday cake from Millie’s Cookies, you will understand why. Let’s put it this way: if it’s anywhere near as good as the original Hayley is going to have to make a dash with it before I stop plucking my eyebrows, start taking some testosterone supplements for a more gruff sounding voice and dye myself blue as an excuse for petty cake theft.
